No longer solely the realm of influencers and dog memes, Instagram and Snapchat have emerged as serious platforms for journalists and news organizations to get compelling, important stories into the hands of one of the hardest markets to pin down: 18-35-year-olds. But creating a compelling mobile-first visual story takes more than just being #blessed. Come learn from an expert who's shot a SnapDoc on the opioid crisis, covered the 2016 election on mobile platforms for WSJ, reported from a war zone on Instagram, and trained journalists around the globe how to do the same.
Originally developed for foreign correspondents of The New York Times, this two-day intensive will empower you to adapt your skills in reporting and writing to new ways of storytelling with expert instruction and hands-on learning. This isn’t just a photography or video course: Instead we approach visual storytelling with a mobile audience in mind. We tackle everything from identifying the right stories and writing a mobile-friendly script, to nitty-gritties of getting the very best portraits and taking the shake out of your iPhone video. By the end of the workshop, you can expect to leave with sharpened skills in writing for mobile, composing a story through images, and mobile photography and videography. You'll also have a handle on how to create content on native mobile platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, an overview of the trends in the industry, and a toolkit of mobile storytelling secret weapons.
This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how to tell tighter stories for a mobile audience, whether you're an aspiring social media editor, a photo or video journalist who needs to understand vertical, or a reporter who knows what the future holds (think how great it could be if you told your editor you wanted to *also* write the script to adapt your next article into an insta story?) Here’s the full course description.
