Jane Hoppen Residency Program

Longtime Paragraph member Jane Hoppen was an exceptional writer, colleague, friend, and mentor who wrote at the space every morning without fail. Her decency and dedication had a profound effect on every writer she encountered.

Jane challenged traditional notions of sexuality and gender throughout her work. We would like to identify emerging writers who exemplify Jane’s values in order to honor her life, work, and contribution to the Paragraph community. See below for details, requirements and link to application.

The Scholarship

We are offering six-month residencies at Paragraph (shorter time periods considered based on need). The next residency runs from September 15, 2019-March 15, 2020. The residency gives you full-time (24 hour) access to both the Union Square and Williamsburg locations for the duration of the residency. We expect applicants to be able to thrive in a community and co-working environment.

Requirements

DEADLINE: July 19, 2019. We will be accepting applications starting on May 31, 2019.

All applicants must complete an application and submit a writing sample of 3-5 pages in length (prose, poetry, play, screenplay, etc.), double-spaced in PDF of TXT format. The writing sample may be a fragment of a longer work.

We are seeking emerging LGBTQ+ writers who embody Jane’s values and are based in New York City. Jane was an early riser and was always one of the first people at our communal space every morning. Her fiction appeared in various literary magazines, and she published two novels, a novella, and a non-fiction book.

Applicants should be writers of any genre who identify as LGBTQ+ and produce writing that challenges social norms and expectations regarding sexuality, gender, race, and/or class.

About Jane Hoppen

Jane Hoppen lived in Brooklyn, NY. Her fiction appeared in various literary magazines, including Story Quarterly, Feminist Studies, Room of One’s Own, The Dirty Goat, PANK, Western Humanities Review, Gertrude Journal, Platte Valley Review, and Superstition Review.

Her first novel, In Between, was published by Bold Strokes Books in December 2013 and was a finalist in the Lambda Literary Awards for an LGBT Debut Novel and a winner of the Golden Crown Literary Society Awards for Debut Fiction. Her novella, The Man Who Was Not, was published by Bold Strokes Books in June 2014. Her second novel, The Northwoods, was published in 2018.
